Made Year 2

For the last 2 years, suma has been a part of the Modernized Anti-Racist Data Ecosystem (MADE) project, led by the Coalition of Communities of Color. The project brings together several community organizations who serve frontline communities. The goal? To build a new system that organizes community data to advance health equity and environmental justice across the Portland Metro.

This year, we created the plan and process for how the data system will work. That plan will be used to publish a request for a system build.

New DeepArmor testing

Suma expanded our partnership with Deep Armor, an award-winning cyber-security firm. This work is part of our long-term commitment to assess and enhance app security and to clearly communicate our security practices to our users and partners.

This Phase 2 Deep Armor assessment has increased security and protection of personal data on the suma platform, including new training for the suma team.

Working with an outside security consultant provides suma with an unbiased, expert evaluation of our systems, helping us identify vulnerabilities that might be overlooked and ensuring that we are following best practices.

BIKETOWN

We spent the start of summer planning events with community partners to test our integration with BIKETOWN before it officially launches. On July 13, we held a Ride & Shop event in partnership with APANO and Latino Network. Together, we signed people up for BIKETOWN for All and rode to Lents International Farmers Market. It was a hot, hot day, but 14 community members and staff made the trip from the APANO Community Center to the market and back!

Our next BIKETOWN event is Friday, August 1. Suma users will take a group ride using adaptive bikes from Albertina Kerr x BIKETOWN’s adaptive mobility options. We created this event in response to user feedback.

Accommodation Work Update

Suma has continued working with our accommodation partners—Cyma Space, Ride Connection, The Uprise Collective, Community Vision, and Albertina Kerr. We recently completed one-on-one interviews with The Uprise Collective community members as a part of our plan to make the app more accessible. We’re scheduling more interviews with Community Vision and Cyma Space community members.

We’ve identified and made some early accommodation improvements to the suma app, including better contrast, and multilingual alt text. These were done as first steps toward bigger accommodation changes we’ll make in the future.

The BIKETOWN and accommodation work has been made possible through funding entirely by the City of Portland, Portland Clean Energy Community Benefits Fund.
