editor's note

Hi suma friends,

Our team is gearing up for some big things this coming month: our first crowdfunding campaign and an event at Tropicale! We’re excited to share more details in the coming weeks, keep an eye out! This last month we held a remote session about internet security with The Uprise collective and there’s some news about the broadband affordability program workgroup. We have some app updates to share regarding mobility and security.

Thanks for reading and keeping us with us,

Crowdfund

On June 24th we will officially launch our crowdfunding campaign to support our Summer Special! We will be collecting donations at mysuma.org/donate until the 26th of July, feel free to be an early donor and kick this campaign off with a bang!

Tropicale!

We are excited to invite you to our crowdfunding event at Tropicale, located at 2337 NE Glisan St, Portland, OR 97232, on July 3rd from 5-7 pm. Tropicale will be offering a special cocktail for suma, with a portion of the sales generously donated to our fund. Join us for an evening of community and delicious drinks! If you know you’ll be there RSVP here.

Farmers Market Update

The start to the farmers market season met suma with a mix of sunshine and non-stop rain in true Portland spring fashion. The four farmers market support positions on the suma team have been a wonderful addition. We are a regular stopping point for some community members and have onboarded several new folks every market day. We welcome folks to stop by, talk to the staff and learn more about free Lime rides via the suma app every Saturday at St Johns Farmers Market from 9-2 and every Sunday at King Market from 10-2. Soon, we’ll be offering free e-scooter training so look for updates!

Broadband Affordability Program

The Oregon-specific broadband affordability program workgroup convening has commenced. Representative Marsh brought together folks from the PEW Center who have been tracking broadband efforts across the country, as well as the Oregon Public Utility Commission to explain how Oregon’s current affordability program (Oregon Telephone Assistance Program) works. Work on developing a sustainable broadband affordability fund will continue with meetings scheduled on Monday July 15 at 1:30-3:00 as well as Monday August 19 at 1:30-3:00.

Digital Organizing

Suma hosted an internet security remote online session covering password protection, identifying phishing scams, as well as protections against phishing scams. This session was in partnership with The Uprise Collective, a nonprofit that aims to open up spaces and provide support for communities with targeted identities.

It was a remote event with community members asking questions, offering their worries, and sharing other solutions to online safety they had found. If any community partners are interested in having suma host a digital capacity-building event with their community, please contact us at organzing@mysuma.org.

Outreach

Oregon Active Transportation Summit. June 12, Lime invited the suma team to join them on a

lunchtime panel at the 2024 Oregon Active Transportation Summit. We appreciated the opportunity to share information about the first-of-its-kind Lime app-suma app integration with the Summit’s community of advocates, organizers, professionals, and decision-makers.

Transparency, Privacy, and Security

Suma worked with Deep Armor to complete a security assessment of the suma app,

supporting our long-term commitment to assess and enhance app security and to clearly communicate our security practices to our users and partners.

Mobility

Y’all may remember our new partnership with Ride Connection from an earlier newsletter, this partnership helps us provide transportation options for the elderly and people with disabilities. Since then, we’ve added Ride Connection links and information to the app’s mobility page so suma users can find Lime e-scooters and learn about Ride Connection all in one place!
